About the Item
Coffee table model G4A, designed by Janni van Pelt in 1958, is a distinctive example of post-war Dutch modernism. The design is defined by its clear geometric language and restrained, architectural presence. The square, black-coated steel frame is supported by four slender, subtly tapered legs, giving the table an elegant and well-balanced proportion. The wired glass top introduces a refined texture and visual depth, while maintaining the table’s sober and minimalist character.
Janni van Pelt (1931– ) is a Dutch furniture and interior designer, renowned for her functional yet aesthetically refined designs. After the Second World War, she studied interior design at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, where she met her future husband and design partner Dick Brouwers. In 1953, they began working for My Home woninginrichting in Amsterdam, the company founded by Van Pelt’s father, the influential designer Bas van Pelt (1900–1945), who died in a concentration camp near Hamburg. In 1957, the firm was renamed Bas van Pelt Binnenhuisarchitectuur in his memory.
The company flourished during the post-war years and opened a second showroom in The Hague in the early 1960s. Its stores presented a carefully curated selection of progressive Northern European design, including works by Janni van Pelt herself. Today, her coffee tables and dining sets are highly sought after for their timeless design and quality craftsmanship.
Condition
The table is in good, used condition, consistent with its age. Minor signs of wear are present, including small areas of surface rust on the steel frame and small chips to the glass top, located in two of the corners.
Restoration (optional)
If desired, the table can be professionally restored. This may include refinishing the steel frame and producing a new glass top.
