About the Item

This coffee table is made from an old Japanese mortar. It is made of zelkova wood and is thought to date to the Meiji period. The harmonious black color, which has naturally changed over time, is striking. Unlike painted pieces, the natural black color is expressed, giving it an appearance reminiscent of Japanese folk art. It is very heavy, making it difficult for one person to lift. However, it adds a sense of solidity and power to any space. The design is unusual compared to typical mortars and is rarely seen even in Japan. It has no decorations and is carved to appear raised at the top and bottom, making it an item that combines simple, quiet beauty with strength. In addition to being used as a coffee table or side table, you can also use it as a flower pot by turning the hole upwards. It is an item that will add the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi to any space. Weight: 68.6kg
