This is a large, antique, primitive-style coffee table from Japan, believed to date from the Meiji period (1860s–1900s). It is crafted from a massive zelkova tree trunk, with an impressive diameter of approximately 800 mm. Such large pieces of zelkova are extremely rare today, making this table exceptionally valuable in its own right. Boldly carved from a single solid log, the form radiates a commanding presence despite its simplicity. The beautiful adze marks on the top surface capture both raw strength and delicate expression, while the grain, cracks, and tool marks tell a silent story shaped over more than a century. The deep black finish sharpens the wood’s natural character, bringing a sense of calm and quiet tension to any space. While striking as a coffee table, it also serves beautifully as a display stand for art or objects. Its dignified presence harmonizes effortlessly with both traditional Japanese interiors and modern, minimalist spaces, creating a unique atmosphere.
