About the Item

This is an old Japanese primitive-style coffee table. With its honest yet powerful presence, it represents a form born purely from practical use—one that has been naturally elevated into beauty. The moment it is placed in a space, it emits a quiet yet overwhelming sense of presence. The table is believed to date to the Meiji period (1860s–1900s). It strongly reflects the atmosphere of a time in Japan when natural materials and handcraft were deeply intertwined during the early stages of modernization. A sincere respect for the material itself, rather than an emphasis on efficiency, can be felt in every detail of this piece. The table is carved from a single massive block of keyaki (Japanese zelkova). Only a tree of considerable age and size could have yielded such scale, resulting in a form that seems to encapsulate the raw power of nature itself. The coexistence of straight lines and subtle irregularities gives the piece a sculptural intensity reminiscent of a carved art object. The tabletop reveals the bold, flowing grain characteristic of keyaki, shifting in expression depending on how the light falls across its surface. Knots, natural movement, and variations are all integral to its character—qualities that can never be artificially reproduced. The structure is solid and stable, with no wobbling, and remains in very good condition despite its age. That it continues to be fully functional after so many years is a testament to both the quality of the material and the craftsmanship. As an embodiment of the spirit of wabi-sabi, this table brings depth, stillness, and quiet strength to a contemporary interior. This piece will be carefully packed and securely shipped from Japan.
