About the Item
This is an antique Japanese primitive-style coffee table, believed to have been crafted in the Meiji period (1860s–1900s). Even after more than a century, it retains an overwhelming presence. It is carved powerfully from a single block of zelkova (keyaki), a grand hardwood tree, giving it a bold and monumental form.
Keyaki has long been treasured in Japan as a premium material for furniture and architecture. Its grain is exceptionally strong and beautiful, and this piece showcases that character to the fullest. The dynamic movement of the grain along the sides, the layered growth rings visible on the top, and the natural cracks formed through drying all create a profound expression—almost like capturing the memory of the earth within the wood.
The black finish that covers the entire piece has mellowed naturally over time, giving it a quiet depth and strong presence within any space.
