About the Item

A Chinese low table from the late Qing dynasty, early 20th century, featuring cabriole legs, a carved apron, and a hinged lift top. Originally conceived as a storage chest with a flat surface, this form did not exist historically as a “coffee table” in China but lends itself perfectly to modern use in that role today. The rectangular planked surface opens to reveal an interior compartment, combining decorative presence with practical storage. The apron is carved in low relief with scrolling foliage and stylized motifs, enhancing the elegance of the design. Resting on graceful cabriole legs ending in pad feet, the table balances refined carving with solid construction. The rich brown patina, softened by age and use, highlights both the natural wood grain and the depth of the carving. Versatile in scale and proportion, this late Qing Chinese table offers both history and function. It will serve as a distinctive centerpiece in a living room or study, where its decorative carvings, warm patina, and hidden storage will be equally appreciated.

This apron is adorned with a central calligraphic motif surrounded by scrolls, animals, foliage and geometric accents.
