About the Item

Ledge Coffee Table, is made of solid ash with a black glass top and a mirror polished base. It stems from material exploration inspired by cliffs around the studio, making solid ash reference crumbling stone through layered hand carving. The Shale and Ledge Collections' name was inspired by the cliffs outside Simon Johns' studio, in the Missisquoi Valley in Quebec. Shale is a type of rock formation that tends to split and erode in layers, leaving behind a layered and random composition of textures. The mapping of the composition of this cliff was sketched on to the pieces of the collection, and carved out in layers, with a router and a chisel.

Missisquoi 01 Coffee Table (Edition 4 of 13) by Simon Johns
By Simon Johns
Located in East-Bolton, Quebec
Missisquoi 01 is a numbered and asymmetrical two part coffee or cocktail table, with a space that divides it as the river divides the Missisquoi Valley. The black ashwood was felled, milled and dried near the studio, and the stone is from the river's banks. The stone and plank that support the two parts form a continuous axis end to end, through the divide. The beauty of the Brutalist natural stone contrasts and converses with the delicate craftsmanship of the wood plateau...

Ledge Floating Console (96") by Simon Johns
By Simon Johns
Located in East-Bolton, Quebec
Ledge is a floating console, mounted to the wall, in solid ash with a black glass top. It stems from material exploration inspired by the cliffs around Johns’ studio, making solid ash reference crumbling stone through a unique technique. The wood components are scored across the grain, then carved by breaking the woods grain, to create patterns of variable depths, according to Johns’ sketch of the rock formations outside. The facade of this piece wraps around to the sides, and the center opens up as two doors, to reveal a functional cabinet. The opaque black glass top nods to the mirror effects of water and contrasts with the minerality of the rest. Due to the hand carved facade, no two pieces are quite the same. Measure: 96". *Available in blackened or stone grey ash finishes. Also available in other sizes: - Ledge 40 // 40" x 22" x 11" - Ledge 60 // 60” x 25...
