About the Item

This rare and highly expressive majolica coffee table is an iconic early postwar work by Otello Rosa for the San Polo ceramics workshop in Venice. Produced in 1952, the sculptural top—titled “Cinque Cavalli”—is model 6103, one of the most sought-after designs created by Rosa during his celebrated period at San Polo. The dramatic, high-relief composition depicts five horses in dynamic, almost mythic motion, modeled with exceptional detail and glazed in Rosa’s signature palette of turquoise, violet, black, and white. The richly textured majolica surface shows deep pooling, variation, and movement within the glaze—hallmarks of San Polo’s mid-century Venetian craft tradition. The elongated, asymmetrical ceramic form is elevated on brass plate leg mounts and slender vertical brass supports that hold the floating glass top above. These brass structural elements were expertly replaced approximately ten years ago, fabricated to match the original design and ensure long-term stability. The replacements were executed with high-quality materials and faithful proportions, allowing the table to present exactly as intended while offering improved structural security. The glass top hovers above the sculptural scene, allowing the horses’ forms to be viewed from all angles and integrating the piece seamlessly into both functional and decorative settings. Part table, part ceramic sculpture, this work epitomizes the experimental spirit of early 1950s Italian decorative arts. Overall condition is excellent, with the expected minor wear to the majolica consistent with careful vintage preservation. A powerful and rare statement piece for collectors of Italian mid-century ceramics and sculptural furniture.

Genaro Alvarez Mosaic Glass Tile Cocktail Table Mexico, circa 1955
By Genaro Alvarez
Located in Camden, ME
Classic glass tile mosaic coffee table from the Mexico City Studio of the noted artist Genaro Alvarez dating from the mid-1950s. There are three different compositional designs in the creation of this mosaic top. The first is the abstract pictorial of a universe of white, crème and grey surrounding a "Black Hole" with a galaxy of yellow and black swirling along its serpentine "lariat" of a double ended orbit path marked by gold tiles. The second is the consistent placement of the background tiles in concise repetitive patterns of concentric half circular arcs. The third is the placement of gold mirrored tiles adding points of sparkle over the entire surface as the intersection points of a grid, a very interesting and sophisticated addition. The integration of these three design elements adds an unexpected complexity and cohesion to the overall composition. Genaro Alvarez is recognized as one Mexico's great mid century masters of mosaic design of his era and had an international reputation and clientele with several major architectural installations here in the United States. From Don Shoemaker dot com. "One artist that was recognized for his mosaic furniture creations is Genaro Alvarez. The Genaro Alvarez Studio, (located in Mexico City) was known for its mosaic work in murals and floor designs as well as decorative furnishings such as lamps, trays and furniture using various types of natural rocks...
