About the Item
A gorgeous and rare pair of tribal African trunk-hewn Mid Century coffee tables in wonderful vintage condition. Crafted by the Bamileke people of the Western Highlands of Cameroon, most likely around 1950, this strikingly attractive and attention-grabbing pair will add outstanding cultural interest and a fabulously sculptural, Organic-Modern, Bohemian aesthetic to any interior.
Impressively sized and reassuringly heavy, each table was hewn and expertly hand-carved from an individual Kola tree trunk and then finished in black paint to create these breathtakingly impactful tables. They feature stunning pierce-relief carved trunks with mesmerising interlocking lattice detailing, which are fringed by fabulously bulbous circular borders to the base and tabletop.
A great size for versatile coffee or end tables, these wonderful pieces are sometimes described as stools and would also work well as occasional or bedside tables. Each table has its own unique, organic shape and they vary slightly in size and width. The interweaving geometric trunks symbolize prestige and power and they would have originally served as tables or seats during tribal chieftain ceremonies.
Wonderful pieces for an eclectic space, these stylish tables will add artistic intrigue, cultural significance and an extremely stylish presence to any setting.
CONDITION
These tables are in very good vintage condition. Solid, sturdy and structurally sound, they were crafted from very strong and reassuringly heavy Kola hardwood and built to last. They have minor to-be-expected marks to show their age and a couple of cracks to the top which only adds to their authenticity and vintage appeal and doesn’t affect their sturdiness, but suggests they might be better used as tables rather than stools. Overall they’re an extraordinary pair of tables in wonderful vintage condition and if well looked after they should remain just as breathtaking for many generations to come - please see the photos.

In 1922 she returned to Lyon to take over the management of her father Henri Picard's ceramic art workshop, a workshop created in the 19th century.
She will keep the management of this factory until 1951.
Around this same period 1947/1948, Max and Dominique Picard...
