About the Item

Knut Hesterberg, 1914 - 2016 Polished Aluminum and Glass 1960s A matched pair of coffee tables, polished cast aluminum bases, with glass tops. Knut Hesterberg grew up as the son of foundry master Werner Hesterberg in Maulburg. After graduating from high school, he first did an apprenticeship in his parents' metal foundry and then attended the Kunstgewerbeschule in Basel. He was a student of the architect and artist Max Bill; from 1965 he was a student and collaborator of the sculptor Mary Vieira(Sao Paulo). Both had a trend-setting influence on his artistic work. Two years later he founded the studio "for free and applied form" in Maulburg. His numerous exhibitions have taken him to Basel, Munich, and Milan, among other places. In 1984 the artist moved to Provence. His constructivist sculptures are in public buildings and squares in Lörrach, Schopfheim, Steinen and Maulburg. His furniture design for sculptural coffee tables (often made of steel, aluminum and glass) and armchairs in the Mid-Century Modern style were licensed by well-known manufacturers, in particular by Ronald Schmitt (Eberbach) and to a lesser extent by Bacher Tische (Renningen). The artist realized his ideas in sculptural representations, in compact bodies or in rhythmically rotating surfaces. In many of his works, Hesterberg saw the static as a "momentary phase of dynamics". He wanted changes to be understood as a “function of permanence”; "As long as something moves, it lasts and continues to exist, an 'additive development'." Hesterberg wanted to express "extreme, structural simplicity" in his works. From the viewer he expected "not mere amazement, but conscious observation and thus recognition".
