About the Item

POUL KJÆRHOLM (Denmark, 1929 - 1980) HANNE KJAERHOLM (Denmark, 1930-2009). Podium/Low table. Aluminum frame and acrylic table top. Model never for sale, made exclusively for exhibition at the Holstebro Art Museum. Measurements: 30 x 61 x 61 cm. Almost as elementary and minimalist as the style of its intellectual authors, Poul and Hanne Kjærholm, this tender table demonstrates Kjærholm's development. Although its structure is simplified to identical elements, its square form is testimony to his evolution from industrial designer to furniture architect. Poul Kjaerholm and Hanne Kjærholm were a married couple of Danish architects and designers, known for their collaboration in creating Hanne's house in 1962 and for their influence on modern architecture and design. Poul designed the furniture for the house, while Hanne designed it using a minimalist aesthetic. Poul Kjærholm was a Danish designer trained at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen, where he entered in 1952 after beginning his apprenticeship with cabinetmaker Gronbech in 1948. Since the mid-fifties he worked for his friend EjvindKoldChristiansen, a businessman who always gave him total creative freedom. In his earliest creations, such as his PKO plywood furniture series, his strong personality is already evident. In 1958 he attracted international attention with his contribution to the "Formes Scandinaves" exhibition in Paris, and in the same year he won the Lunning Prize for his PK 22 chair. In 1957 and 1960 he was awarded the Grand Prix at the Milan Triennale, and in 1959 he was admitted to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. In 1973 he was appointed director of the Danish Design Institute, where he taught from 1976. Today his designs are held in leading design collections, including those of the Victoria ALbert Museum in London and the MOMA in New York.

This glass and flat steel table is was designed by Preben Fabricius (1931-1984) and Jørgen Kastholm (1931-2007). Together they started a design studio, Fabricius & Kastholm in 1961. These two Danish designers focussed on creating timeless functional designs that were simple and had the aesthetic of minimalism. Fabricius and Kastholm at first were creating pieces with leather, glass, or steel; they found inspiration in the sturdiness of Scandinavian designs in the sixties. In 1969, the pair was awarded the German Gute Form prize for the famous FK 87 Grasshopper Chair and the FK armchairs.
