About the Item

Roger Capron “Garrigue” Ceramic Tile Coffee Table, France, 1960s This refined coffee table was designed by Roger Capron in France during the 1960s and belongs to his iconic Garrigue series, one of the most celebrated bodies of work in postwar French ceramic design. The table is signed “R.Capron” on one of the ceramic tiles, confirming its authenticity and collectible value. The tabletop is composed of hand-crafted ceramic tiles, produced using Capron’s distinctive Garrigue technique. Real leaves and plants were pressed into the clay, and during the firing process the organic material burned away, leaving delicate and highly detailed botanical impressions permanently embedded in the surface. Each tile displays subtle variations in tone and pattern, creating a warm, rhythmic composition that is characteristic of Capron’s work. The tiles are finished with softly rounded edges and arranged in an elegant linear layout, giving the table a sculptural yet balanced appearance. The ceramic top rests on a solid patinated beechwood base, stained in a deep, dark tone that provides a strong visual contrast to the light, earthy ceramics. The architectural construction of the base reflects the sober, modernist language of mid-century French design while remaining timeless and versatile. This piece exemplifies Capron’s ability to merge artisanal craftsmanship with functional design. As a signed example from his Garrigue series, it represents a particularly desirable and collectible work. Ideal as a coffee table or low table, it integrates effortlessly into mid-century modern, contemporary, or eclectic interiors. Roger Capron - Coffee Table, Garrigue/White Ceramic Tiles, Dovetail Metal Frame
By Roger Capron
Located in Stratford, CT
*** Important detail: custom height available (1)*** Large coffee table with the famous Roger Capron Garrigue tiles, designed from 1968 to 1982. Mr. Capron was often balancing his designs by incorporating either brown or white enameled terra cotta tiles. The handcrafted Garrigue tiles are produced by a technique in which real leaves were pressed into the clay and, during firing, disintegrated, leaving a finely detailed imprint. The leaves come from "La Garrigue", a variety of vegetation indigenous to southeastern France only, where Roger Capron lived and worked for 60 years. These Garrigue tiles inspired a large series of side to dining tables, including wall covering. Many kitchen in the French Riviera have their walls covered with Garrigue tiles. This table is mounted on a really sturdy dovetail metal frame. It is in near perfect condition, patina due to age on metal frame. (1) Mr Capron was extremely influenced by the Japanese life style; coffee table are usually low. We can change the legs to match your desired height. Please keep in mind that we provide this service only for the tables that have a dovetail frame and for which the frames have a similar look with the replacement legs...
