About the Item

Beautiful organic form sculptural coffee table produced in the mid 1960s by famed italian artist and sculptor Lorenzo Burchiellaro (1933-). The main expressive, sculptural form ,which supports the protective glass table top is cast in extremely thick ,heavy gauge aluminum plate and bears Burchiellaro's impressed signature. Part of Burchiellaro's finishing technique was to surface treat these sculptural relief forms with various acids in combination with fire to create a unique chromatic surface layer which results in an organic form with beautiful subtle shifts in natural tone and color. This technique results in each piece being completely unique. The legs of the table are made from artisan crafted wood. Burchiellaro worked mainly in metals: bronze, pewter, zinc, aluminum, gold and silver (at the beginning of his career), but especially copper. The colors are the result of natural processes started with the application of acids, oxidation and fire which contribute to give his works a chromatic never equal to itself; chromaticism that is the result - often unpredictable of a particular dosage of acid and fire and the weather conditions at the time. Another constant in the search for Lorenzo Burchiellaro was to give priority to the vacuum rather than to the full, in this way the space surrounding the object becomes that thing "happens" from which we learn to see form in another way. All this happens within a continuous experimentation possible thanks to a complete mastery of techniques and materials. Born in Venice in 1933, during the early 1950s Lorenzo Burchiellaro studied in Venice at the School of Art (metal department) and at the Academy of Fine Arts (sculpture). During this incredibly vibrant and expressive period of the applied arts in Italy, Burchiellaro created his first works ,experiences that give life to jewelry, vases, bowls, big shields, wall clocks etc. In these early years, after seeing the quality and expressive organic nature of his work Peggy Guggenheim commissioned a pair of earrings. Burchiellareo then moved to Rome and in 1960, the year of the Olympics in the capital, he organized his first solo exhibition at the Gallery Myricae on Via del Babuino. He exhibited at the Venice Biennale and that of Gubbio, where he received in 1963 and 1968, the first prize for the Applied Arts section. The prize focused on the creative duo consisting of essential design and great technique, with a progressive depletion of form and matter. Between the late '60s and early '70s - the period of the famous Eurodomus and Triennale di Milano -exhibitions. Burchiellaro continued to experiment with new steps of traditional techniques, introducing technologically advanced materials that allowed for the production of more complex forms. This table comes from that period of artistic research. Burchiellaro also produced commissions for interior designers working in the urban field, in 1987 he produced two large head turning sculptures in "Wurmian" bronze for the Beltrame showroom on 5th Avenue in New York, the silver-plated copper lead windows of the boutique Gravati of Vigevano (2002), the rose window, stained glass windows and the bas-relief for the portal of the nave of the church to St. Pius X Matteo di Treviso Riese (2004). Burchiellaro's works can now be regularly found in the most prestigious auction rooms around the globe.

Supremely elegant and super rare coffee table by Milan architect Lorenzo Forges Davanzati, produced by ELAM,Italy in1961. This design was produced in two sizes this is the larger and rarer variant of an already extremely rare design. The table is made of enameled wood with a decorative stainless steel insert to the pedestal. This table is very seldom seen and was published in Casa Vogue,Domus and the italian design bible "repertorio 1950-80". Impressive handcrafted, sculptural relief table lamp by French artist and sculptor 'PH Jean'. The four beautiful relief panels, clearly influenced by the 'op art' movement of the period, are all composed from built up layers of white Lucite, stainless steel and brass, there are two different relief pattern designs set front and back and left and right ie matching relief patterns are set on opposing faces to each other , one pair of relief panels have a white Lucite background one of which bears the engraved artists' signature 'PH Jean' and the other two relief panels are set on a stainless steel background. Please refer to detail photos. The small inset base is composed from white Lucite. The lamp has been rewired and still retains the original linen shade but this needs replacing as it is torn and stained and has only been kept as a template from which to make a matching new shade. A classic piece of chic refined French design the kind for design often seen in a Philippe Grange, David Hicks or Francois Catroux interior, would look great alongside other classic French works of the same perios such as Maria Pergay, Philippe Hiquily, Michel Boyer, Guy De Rougemont, Francois Morrelet etc Philippe Jean twice won the "lampe d'or of creation' in France , the gold prize for lighting design and also a silver medal at the 'Salon des artistes Decoratifs' in Paris during this period. Please see image 4 for a copy of an article which confirms these prizes. PH Jean also designed a highly collectable illuminated coffee table for the highly prestigious and renowned Galerie Eric and Xiane Germain, Paris, 1970.
