About the Item
Unique Coffee Table by Mogens Mogensen
Sweden, 1940s
This exceptional coffee table was specially commissioned by the Swedish architect Mogens Mogensen for his private residence in Tågaborg, and stands as a rare and deeply personal example of Scandinavian modernism from the 1940s.
The organically shaped tabletop reflects the period’s move away from strict functionalism toward a more human, sculptural modernism, where softness of form and material warmth were paramount. The flowing, cloud-like silhouette is both playful and refined, making the table a striking yet harmonious presence in any interior.
Crafted in birch veneer, a material highly favored in Sweden during the 1940s for its lightness, stability, and elegant grain, the table displays a beautifully aged surface with a warm, golden patina. The gently tapered legs further emphasize the table’s light visual expression and architectural clarity.
As a one-off piece made for personal use, this table carries a level of intimacy and authenticity rarely found in period furniture. It is not only a functional object, but a testament to the ideals of Scandinavian design at mid-century: craftsmanship, restraint, and a close dialogue between architecture and everyday life.
