Upcycled Coffee Table by Marta Torrent – Urban Mines Project
This sculptural coffee table is part of Urban Mines, a collection of functional design objects created by Marta Torrent Boix, a Girona-born product designer currently based in London.
Made from a reused microwave casing and reclaimed metal, this table embodies the principles of circular design—transforming urban waste into collectible, high-end design.
The Urban Mines project focuses on collecting discarded materials—metals, plastics, textiles, and electronic components—from urban environments. These are considered “urban mines”, rich with untapped design potential.
Marta Torrent and her team carefully select and process these materials to create limited-edition furniture and artistic objects. Each stage of the process is designed to minimize waste and maximize reuse, making each item unique and sustainable.
Combining her passion for handcrafted metalwork with a photographic archive of electronic waste, Marta Torrent documents the growing problem of urban discard culture. Her work is both conceptual and tangible, turning waste into emotionally resonant design pieces.
The coffee table reflects the intersection of sculpture, sustainability, and storytelling, and was presented during her participation in the Entorns artist residency.
