About the Item

The very rare coffee table with a strong, modernist form. It was designed by Karl Erik Ekselius for J.O. Carlsson in Sweden during the 1960s. The geometric table is made of light oak, considered a royal wood. It is a very strong and durable material characterized by rich grain. The wood is scratch- and damage-resistant and acquires a refined appearance with age. The square tabletop rests on wide, rectangular legs that curl under the tabletop. The piece is visually light and highly functional, and the arrangement of beams at different heights creates a geometric and linear expression. Although the coffee table is a decorative detail, it adds character to the entire arrangement. The original signature is on the bottom side of tabletop. Karl-Erik Ekselius (1914 to 1998) was a Swedish architect and furniture designer. He studied carpentry in Germany and at the Carl Malmsten Furniture School in Stockholm in the 1930s. He then worked for the family company J. O. Carlsson (later known as JOC Möbel AB) in Vetlanda, eventually taking over the company's management in 1970. In 1955, he made his breakthrough as a designer at the H55 exhibition in Helsingborg, where he presented chairs, a table, and a sofa made by J. O. Carlsson. One of his most famous pieces was the F 139 armchair, which was selected for the Dag Hammarskjöld Library in New York. In the 1960s and 1970s, the company focused on furniture for public spaces and offices. It was during this time that Ekselius designed the Mondo armchair, made with an extruded aluminum frame and leather upholstery. Ekselius worked as an architect on projects such as Columbia University in New York and New Zealand House in London. He also designed furniture for America Line cruise ships. The table is in very good vintage condition. It has been refreshed. The colors of the products shown in the photos may differ slightly from the actual ones. This is due to individual monitor settings and lighting conditions – the photos were taken in artificial light, which may affect the perception of colors. However, we strive to ensure that the photos reflect the actual appearance of the product as faithfully as possible. The offer may include photos of item in the living space, but these are for illustrative purposes only.
