About the Item
This coffee table with extension leaf was crafted in Indonesia around 1970 and is made from solid teak wood. Indonesia is a former Dutch colony, and this historical connection is clearly reflected in the design. During the twentieth century, a tradition developed there of artisanal teak furniture made in small workshops, produced as bespoke pieces with great care for material, construction, and finish. These works often combined tropical hardwoods with a distinctly European design language. This table is a characteristic example of that tradition.
The table has a base length of approximately 140 cm (about 55.1 inches) and is fitted with an integrated extension leaf measuring 39 cm (about 15.4 inches), allowing it to adapt easily to different uses. In its closed position, it presents itself as a well-balanced coffee table; when extended, it becomes a generously proportioned surface suitable for larger seating areas or more versatile use.
The top is constructed with a mitered outer frame surrounding a recessed central panel and finished with a subtly profiled edge. This construction gives the surface both visual depth and structural refinement. Over time, the teak has developed a warm honey tone, with a deep natural sheen and a rich patina that beautifully highlights the grain.
Along the long side are two drawers, designed as pass-through drawers that can be opened from either side. This practical and relatively uncommon feature underscores the thoughtful nature of the design and makes the table functional from multiple positions within a room. The original metal ring pulls provide a restrained yet characterful contrast against the warm wood.
The table stands on clean, tapered legs that lend the piece a light architectural appearance while ensuring a stable and balanced base. The contrast between the refined understructure and the richly aged teak top gives the table its distinctive tension.
This coffee table is a strong example of high-quality Indonesian craftsmanship from the 1970s, where colonial history, European design principles, and local artisanal skill converge. Warm in character, carefully constructed, and timeless in form, it is a statement piece that works equally well in a modern interior or in a more eclectic or mid-century inspired setting.
