About the Item

Wharton Esherick, coffee table, ash, United States, 1954 This exquisitely crafted coffee table exemplifies the artistic mastery of American designer Wharton Esherick. Its dynamic shape, featuring an asymmetrical design with a stretched and concave side, captivates the eye. The elegantly carved feet, displaying subtle depth, showcase Esherick's meticulous attention to detail and skillful craftsmanship. Purposefully created to complement the classic three-legged stools, the table ingeniously incorporates a feature allowing the stools to hang underneath, maximizing practicality. Equipped with casters, the table ensures effortless mobility. The ash top, distinguished by its expressive woodgrain, harmonizes seamlessly with the natural aesthetic of the piece. Its distinctive organic quality, thoughtful material selection, and expert craftsmanship, converge to create this splendid design. On the bottom of the coffee table has the year “1954” engraved as well as the designer’s initials. American artist, furniture designer and pioneer of the Studio Craft Movement Wharton Esherick (1887-1970) studied printmaking and drawing at Philadelphia School of Industrial Arts (now the University of Arts) and Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. In the late 1920s Esherick guided his focus towards the design of wooden furniture. His attention to wood was evoked by the creation of illustration woodcuts. Esherick then discovered his passion for wooden sculptures and finally also furniture which he usually just made once. With the acquisition of his works by the Whitney Museum in New York, Esherick found confirmation of his talent with wooden objects. His oeuvre ranges from Arts Crafts to Cubism and Expressionism. In 1912 he and his wife moved to rural Paoli in Pennsylvania where they settled down for the rest of their lives in order to live a lifestyle more immersed in nature. The old farmhouse got dedicatedly extended by Esherick himself. Today, it hosts the Museum of Wharton Esherick, which allows you to admire his designs in the original setting. Kindly take note that the matching three-legged stools are available. For further details, we encourage you to reach out to our team of design specialists.

Vintage Heywood Wakefield Wheat Finish X Base Square Coffee Table
By Heywood-Wakefield Co.
Located in Chattanooga, TN
There's a rich, deep, aged honey patina on this wheat finish birch / maple. We achieved a a near perfect muted grain and color match to the top surface that we delicately restored. This sleek, study, understated and classic modern coffee table embraces mid-century minimalism design. The "X" base with intersecting spanners adds an appealing architectural elegance that remains timeless to this day. Sculpted, and assembled with no visible hardware. This restored Heywood-Wakefield 392-G square coffee table is an elegant expression of mid-century minimalism, crafted in the signature wheat-maple finish that has made the brand so revered. It measures approximately 36 inches by 36 inches (91 × 91 cm) across the top, and stands about 15.75 inches (40 cm) high — a scale that delivers both generous surface area and low, relaxed visual impact. The design is beautifully composed: a square tabletop with softened edges floats above an intersecting “X”-base, with crossed stretchers that add structural elegance and visual interest without heaviness. The wheat finish has a muted grain: blond tones, subtle warmth, and a light yet rich surface that reflects light softly while grounding surrounding furnishings. The craftsmanship is clean: wood joints are refined, hardware is concealed, allowing the form and wood grain to speak. Because of its proportions and design, this piece works beautifully in a range of interiors. It can anchor a sprawling seating area in a living room, serve as the central gathering point in a lounge, or provide surface and sculptural presence in modern or Scandinavian-light-wood interiors. Its square silhouette allows symmetry in layout; its wheat finish harmonizes with wood tones, brass or matte metal accents, soft upholstery, and even minimalist or muted color palettes. We're certain you won't find a more sublime vintage rendition of this coffee table anywhere. Stamped by the maker with illegible date. Good overall vintage condition. Top has been professionally refinished by our in-house cabinet shop.Only very minor age appropriate imperfections remain on the legs and spanners. Heywood Wakefield Coffee Table...
