About the Item

A sculptural coffee table by Widdicomb, retaining the original manufacturer’s label dated August 1961, with “Sundra” stenciled to the underside. The table dates to a period when Widdicomb was producing sophisticated organic modern furniture distinguished by expressive forms and complex veneer work. The freeform top is veneered in richly figured Carpathian elm, notable for its animated, burl-like grain and natural tonal variation. The perimeter is edged in East Indian laurel veneer, providing a subtle yet deliberate contrast that crisply defines the table’s flowing outline. This nuanced use of multiple veneers reflects the high level of craftsmanship and material sensitivity characteristic of Widdicomb’s better production from the early 1960s. The table is supported by four carved walnut paddle legs, gently tapered and sculpted to echo the curvature of the top. Their organic profile lends visual lightness while maintaining excellent structural stability, and the warm walnut tone complements the complexity of the elm veneer surface. The stencil “Sundra” references the table’s finish; according to direct conversation with the Nakashima Studio, the term Sundra was exclusively associated with George Nakashima’s Widdicomb Origins Line and was not a Widdicomb collection name or finish. As such, the stencil is noted here. Measuring 65 inches wide, 26 inches deep, and 18 inches high, this table presents a strong sculptural presence while maintaining an elegant, low profile. A labeled and dated example of early 1960s American modern furniture, it exemplifies the era’s emphasis on organic form, fine veneers, and thoughtful material contrast.
