About the Item
This pair of tables by Frits Henninsgen from the 1930/40/50s has always fascinated me. Normally, tables either have veneered or solid wood surfaces. These tables have both. And stranger yet, both the veneer and the solid substrate are rosewood.
There is a tension between the purity and robustness of solid wood furniture and the fineness of cabinetmaker furniture, which generally leans in the direction of veneered surfaces for better control.
Frits Henningsen and his contemporary Kaare Klint are the early cabinetmakers that preferred solid wood and taught their craftsman techniques that do not really service today. Sure, there are cabinetmakers who have the technique and skills but they are few and far between and their market is tiny.
Using rosewood as the substrate for rosewood veneer takes the pursuit of quality to a whole new level.
