Console / Library Table in the Manner of Axel Einar Hjorth,
Sweden, 1930s
A refined and minimalistic Swedish console or library table, executed in solid pine by a Swedish cabinetmaker during the 1930s, and designed in the manner of Axel Einar Hjorth.
The table displays a restrained yet architectural composition, characterised by its well-balanced relationship between the elongated tabletop and the pair of sculptural trestle legs. The softly contoured supports and carefully shaped feet lend the piece a quiet monumentality, closely aligned with the proportions and structural clarity found in Hjorth’s more austere furniture designs from the period, including his Utö series.
The solid Swedish pine shows a beautifully developed dark patina with a warm, natural glow, particularly evident in the pronounced grain of the tabletop and the vertical rhythm of the legs. The surface has recently been treated with a fresh application of oil, enhancing depth and tonal variation while preserving the integrity of the original material.
An elegant and versatile piece, suitable for use as a console, library table, or narrow dining table, and a strong example of Swedish functional craftsmanship from the interwar period.
