Unique piece oversized Quaderna console / table with custom black legs
Superstudio, Italy, 1970s
This one-of-a-kind oversized Quaderna console / table was custom-made in the 1970s by Superstudio, produced with the same minor workshops the group relied on at the time for early prototypes and limited productions. The piece was specifically commissioned for a photography studio in Pistoia and differs substantially from standard Quaderna production models.
Most notably, it features fully black custom legs, an unusual and striking variation that sharply contrasts with the iconic white laminated surface articulated by Superstudio’s rational grid. This bespoke detail gives the piece a more architectural and dramatic presence, reinforcing its experimental nature.
The Quaderna series emerged from the radical design movement that developed in Florence in the late 1960s. Superstudio and their contemporaries sought to dismantle the traditional notion of furniture, proposing objects as conceptual tools rather than decorative products. This console / table embodies that vision, operating simultaneously as furniture, manifesto, and spatial device.
Condition
The surface shows signs of use consistent with age, visible in the grid-patterned laminate.
The legs are entirely black and custom-made, distinguishing the piece from standard editions.
The left leg shows a visible bulging caused by age and time, a trace of its material history and authentic vintage character.
Provenance
Commissioned for a photography studio in Pistoia. Alongside this console / table, another bespoke element — a photographic counter — was designed for the same space, underscoring the site-specific and functional intent of these custom works.
This Quaderna console / table is not merely a piece of furniture, but a rare document of radical Italian design. Its custom configuration, scale, and clear provenance make it a significant addition for collectors interested in experimental design and architectural thinking of the 1970s.

Superstudio
Superstudio was founded in 1966 in Florence, Italy, by Adolfo Natalini and Cristiano Toraldo di Francia. One of the country's first Radical design groups as a result of the counterculture movement, Superstudio's anti-architectural proposals used monochrome grid systems as a way to mediate and give equality to space. It was also frequently used in their furniture designs in the way of small white glazed tiles.
