About the Item

A handsome and high quality French mid 19th century Empire st. Mahogany, Ormolu and Rouge Griotte marble console. This wonderful freestanding console is raised by a square flame Mahogany block base with the side supports displaying recessed scrolled designs on the front and sides. The top of the front legs are richly decorated by fire gilded Ormolu mounts with a burnished and matte finish in the shape of Palmettes. The two back supports showcase rectangular columns with a plinth and capitals which frame the original mirror backplate. At the top apron is elongated drawer which is richly decorated with a central circular Ormolu relief of a Roman scholar. The medallion is flanked by two additional Ormolu mounts in the shaped of pierced palmettes before leading to star shaped Ormolu mounts above each leg. The original Rouge Griotte marble top lays above with a finely mottled edge.
