About the Item

A remarkable 1950s Italian console with a glass top, produced by La Permanente Mobili Cantu. This piece embodies the elegant modernism often associated with Gio Ponti, a hallmark of mid-century Italian design. Its sophisticated form is attributed to the celebrated designer Paolo Buffa, with the exquisite decorative elements skillfully executed by Giovanni Gariboldi. The console features a gracefully structured brass frame with intriguing geometric lines. This innovative design not only creates a visually striking profile from any angle but also allows the glass top to seemingly float away from the wall, adding a captivating lightness to its presence. The body is expertly crafted from rich maple, providing a warm counterpoint to the brass. A testament to Gariboldi's renowned artistry, the console is adorned with a stunning painted motif: two delicate white birds (possibly doves) with a pearl necklace, surrounded by a flourishing array of flowers, leaves, and other cornucopia elements. The drawers further boast an elegant carved rectangular decorative relief pattern, showcasing the meticulous detail characteristic of the era's refined Italian craftsmanship. This console is more than just a functional surface; it's a piece of sculptural art, offering a sophisticated blend of form, material, and narrative. Its unique details and elegant proportions make it a compelling addition, destined to be a focal point in an entryway, living room, or hallway, infusing the space with authentic Italian charm and historical allure. Manufacturers mark stamped on piece in top drawer. In original condition with some age-appropriate wear.

Vittorio Dassi Sideboard Hexagon Glass Shelves La Permanente Mobili Cantu 1950s
By La Permanente Mobili Cantù, Vittorio Dassi
Located in Camden, ME
A very rare and sophisticated sideboard by Vittorio Dassi stamped Permanente Mobili Cantu Italy from the 1950s consisting of four suspended cabinets, three of which have locking doors, the fourth has drawers with raised hexagonal pulls. Each cabinet has a chamfered top of a beautifully grained Italian walnut shaped in a distinctive diamond cut. This contrasts with more tightly grained fronts and side panels of the cabinets Above each cabinet is set a hexagonal glass shelf resting inset on brass supports detailed in a flat black lacquer and polished brass attached to the ends of tapering flat pillars of Italian walnut. The interiors of three of the four cabinets are finished in an aged off-white glazed birch with adjustable glass shelving. There are ten polished threaded bronze discs that are held in cast bronze hexagonal housings that allow the sideboard to adjust to uneven or stone flooring. The bronze bases are also accented in flat black lacquer. La Permanente Mobili Cantu was considered one of Italy's top cabinet makers and the cabinet work in this sideboard attests to how beautifully they executed their pieces. The metric measurements...
