About the Item
An exquisite pair of antique French Louis XVI style giltwood and painted demilune console tables. Each features a shaped top of variegated red and ochre marble, cut to follow the semicircular outline of the frame. The apron is painted in black and inset with giltwood decoration, comprising scrolling foliage, floral motifs, and a central medallion with an eagle surrounded by a laurel wreath. On the side panels, further giltwood ornament appears, including wreaths, swags, and birds in profile, framed by rectangular borders.
The bases are supported on four tapered legs, each carved with vertical fluting and finished with gilt surface treatment. The legs terminate in squared feet, with block joints reinforcing the connection to the apron. The upper section of each leg is detailed with carved blocks and gilt ornament, visually integrating the supports into the decorated frieze of the apron.
These console tables are executed in the Louis XVI style, which was characterized by symmetrical, classical forms and the use of neoclassical ornament such as laurel wreaths, eagles, and fluted legs. Such tables were commonly produced in France during the late 18th century and into the 19th century, with giltwood and painted finishes applied to emphasize classical decorative schemes. The combination of a solid marble top with carved and painted wood bases reflects the refined production typical of high-quality French furniture of this style.
