Pair of Rococo Half Moon Marble-Top Console Tables

About the Item

This is an exquisite pair of fabulous half moon console tables in delightful Rococo style. The semi-circular tables are made of mahogany which has superb hand carved and gilded exotic floral decoration to the frieze, the tapering legs and the stretchers. They are topped with beautiful "Rosso Carpazi" marble tops and the finishing touch are the hand carved and gilded garlands of flowers and the gilded bouquet on the stretchers. The attention to detail is absolutely fantastic and it is certain to attract attention wherever it is placed. Condition: In excellent condition, please see photos for confirmation of condition. Dimensions in cm: Height 87 x width 124 x depth 50. Dimensions in inches: Height 2 feet, 10 inches x width 4 feet, 1 inch x depth 1 foot, 8 inches. Griotte marble - is named after the griotte cherry because of its remarkable bright red color. The more red the marble, the higher quality it is. When the marble contains many goniatites (small fossilized shells) full of white calcite the marble is called “Partridge eye”. The quarries, still active today, are in the Herault region and the name “Griotte from Italy” is a marketing label. Red Griotte was the favorite marble for Royal apartments in the 18th century, particularly for mantles, like the one in the office of Louis XIV in Versailles. Rosso Carpazi marble is a material born out of the mountains of Albania. The brown-red ground mass of this beautiful marble is partially brecciated and quite rich with a labyrinth of snow white icing like veins dispersed through out. This natural stone exudes an element of passion and elegance and is ideal as a special piece on fine furnishings. Mahogany is probably one of the largest ‘families’ of hardwood, having many different varieties within its own species. Mahogany has been used for centuries in ship building, house building, furniture making etc and is the core structure of just about every 19th century vanity box, dressing case or jewelry box. It became more of a Victorian trend to dress mahogany with these decorative veneers, such as rosewood, kingwood, burr walnut and Coromandel, so that the actual mahogany was almost hidden from view. Mahogany itself is a rich reddish brown wood that can range from being plain in appearance to something that is so vibrant, figured and almost three dimensional in effect. Although mahogany was most often used in its solid form, it also provided some beautifully figured varieties of veneer like ‘flame’ mahogany and ‘fiddleback’ mahogany (named after its preferred use in the manufacture of fine musical instruments). Cuban mahogany was so sought after, that by the late 1850s, this particular variety became all but extinct.
