This refined pair of English demi-lune tables dates to the 19th century and exemplifies the period’s enduring fascination with Chinoiserie decoration. Each table is topped with a shaped variegated grey marble slab, finely molded at the edge and displaying lively white and charcoal veining. The marble provides a cool, architectural counterpoint to the warmth of the painted bases and shows natural variation consistent with age.
The wooden friezes are finished in a rich yellow ground and hand-painted with Chinoiserie scenes in dark brown and black tones. The imagery includes pagodas, bridges, boats, figures, and stylized landscapes, arranged in continuous narrative panels and framed by delicate linear borders and floral motifs.
