This exceptionally beautiful Mid-Century Italian "Ship" desk, dating to the 1950s, is a stunning display of masterful European marquetry inlay. The piece speaks to the long-held tradition of Italian cabinetmaking, reinterpreted with the unique flair and imagination of the post-war era. Its visual appeal is immediately established by the intricate decorative woodwork that covers its surfaces, creating a cohesive and evocative piece of functional art.
The highlight of the desk is the expertly crafted sailing ship motif on the tabletop, a romantic and detailed image realized through the careful fitting of various wood veneers. Beyond this striking artistic element, the desk is designed for utility, handsomely outfitted with built-in shelves and several keyed drawers. The craftsmanship of the marquetry, a delicate and meticulous process, is evident across the entire structure. The chair opening measures a compact 15.625", suggesting its use as an intimate writing bureau or a striking accent table.
This desk is offered in very original, as-found condition, reflecting a well-lived history. The visible wear and patina are consistent with its age and use, including some drying of the marquetry inlay which has caused bubbling and some minor loss of veneer. The lock mechanisms on the drawers are currently not in working condition. To best preserve the intricate design, a custom-cut glass top is recommended, though it is not included with the desk.
