About the Item

Biedermeier or Empire desk, circa 1820 Vienna Walnut Biedermeier circa 1820 Dimensions: H x W x D: 80 x 134 x 68 cm Description: Desk standing on solid, high square legs with an exceptionally beautiful veneer pattern. Flanked by discreetly arched half-columns, the front of the furniture is divided into five drawers around the knee hole. The large drawer on the right has a double bottom and a document compartment underneath. The centre drawer can be locked, and the keyhole fitting in the form of two musicians with a lute and tambourine is strikingly beautiful. The other drawers are pulled by large brass knobs. The perfectly symmetrical walnut grain pattern gives the piece of furniture a tidy and harmonious appearance. Framed by a gilt brass moulding, the top panel of the cabinet also features the mirrored veneer design so typical of the Biedermeier period. Beautifully crafted on all sides, this desk is suitable for being placed in the centre of the room. The patina - the naturally grown colour of the wood and the traces of work and use deliberately preserved during restoration give this piece of furniture its unmistakable character. Condition: Restored while preserving the patina and hand-polished with shellac. Stable and suitable for everyday use.
