About the Item

19th Century French Renaissance Sculptural Leather Top Writing Table ~ Desk is a spectacular tribute to the wood sculptor's art! A brace of magnificently rendered cherubs appear on each side, flanked by finely carved columns which transition into the apron featuring three-dimensional foliate scrollworks that culminate in a crown over each cherub's curly-haired head. Bounty-of-the earth motifs abound in the sculpture, with abundant foliates as embellishment. More scrollwork was used to create the "H" shaped base, connected with a finely trimmed trestle centered with an oval full relief rosette. Each of the sides is festooned with elaborate foliate and scrollworks, forming an heraldic crest, the center of such on one side bearing the keyhole for the full-width drawer. Gold highlighting on the molded detail only adds to the visual splendor, and to top it all off, hand-tooled sheepskin leather with gold bordering to create the perfect writing surface!
