About the Item

A refined and elegant writing table crafted during France’s opulent Belle Époque period, this crisp and angular little neoclassical bureau plat exhibits the best of the period. Vibrant ruby mahogany woods are used throughout all primary surfaces with a precise craftsmanship expected by the leading designers of the period the drawers exhibit fine dovetailing in the sides and back corners; the two smaller drawers employ a half-slotted dovetail for the inner corner due to the airtight fit of the drawers. An eye for longevity was clearly evident in the careful execution of this table. Dusty gilding on the ormolu gives the mounts a certain understated appeal that flows beautifully with the somewhat more impressionistic representations cast in the corners and escutcheons. Every important edge is finished with finely tooled and chiselled cast bronze the legs are particularly excellent with grooves cut into all four corners of the tapering leg, into which a twisted-rope bronze mount follows from the top through the squared sabots. The writing surface remains in outstanding condition, the black leather top with a Fine tooling around the edges that is highlighted in gilt. It is a perfect size with its slight dimensions, an object that adds depth and interest to a room without in any way overwhelming it. This practical bureau plat will certainly be a cherished part of any classical interior. Condition report: Some blemishes to old leather top (probably not the original leather). All original bronze mounts, loss to lower portion of flower on one leg mount. Minor surface wear to mahogany, some discoloration and color variation. Sturdy, strong and most attractive.
