About the Item
Antique French Writing Desk Secretary Black Forest Carved Oak Renaissance c1890.
Direct from France and part of superb collection of fine antiques we recently acquired, this is truly a one-of-a-kind, most likely commissioned by a French aristocrat (note the carved initial on the center shield).
This exquisite slant front writing desk has too many hand-carved details to individually describe, all obviously hand carved by a master carver. Note the abundant carved French scrolls, Renaissance carved serpents (perched on slant top sides, across the slant front, and larger ones to the front feet), carved mask on the lower serpentine stretcher, even the details on the carved back.
The carved slant top opens (via pressing down the flat area, working like a hidden lever) to reveal a fitted interior with two drawers and the original green leather skiver with gold embossed edges.
