This is a beautiful antique late Victorian satinwood Carlton House desk, by the renowned retailer and manufacturer Maple Co, circa 1880 in date. This beautiful desk is made from satinwood, which has been crossbanded in Tulipwood bordered with boxwood and ebony lines. It is superbly finished all round so it will look amazing in the centre of your study!! The curved superstructure with a simulated fluted gallery, having a central enclosed cupboard, flanked to either side by three small drawers, a further enclosed cupboard and a small drawer with curved hinged flap, having a pull out gold tooled black leather inset writing surface. This provides ample storage for all of your personal and business papers. It has a capacious central frieze drawer with scroll spandrels, flanked by two short drawers to either side. It is raised on square tapering legs that terminate in spade feet with brass castors. It is fitted with the original brass locks, keys and brass drop handles. The locks bear the impressed stamp of the master locksmith Hobbs Co. and tt bears a brass Maple Co, London, Paris, Buenos Aires label The craftsmanship that has gone into this desk is second to none, and it will soon become the centrepiece of your furniture collection. Dimensions in cm: Height 101 x width 136 x depth 68 Dimensions in inches: Height 39.8 x width 53.5 x depth 26.8 Maple Co the renowned furniture retailer of London, Paris and Buenos Aires, were famous for top quality furniture. They were by Royal Appointment and became one of the leading furniture manufacturers of the Victorian and Edwardian eras. They used only the finest quality timber which was imported directly from all over the world. Maple and Company were founded in 1841 in Tottenham Court Road, London and had premises there until 1997. By the 1880s they were the largest and most successful furniture makers in the world, their huge emporium having become a tourist attraction in its own right. In addition to their middle class clientele, they furnished Embassies, hotels, beautiful homes and palaces all over the globe, including Tsar Nicholas's Winter Palace, the Hoffburg Imperial Palace in Vienna, and many of Britain's country houses. Carlton House Desk is a specific antique desk form within the more general bureau à gradin form. This specific form is supposed to have been designed in 1790s for the Prince of Wales (who later became George IV) by George Hepplewhite. It is named after Carlton House, which was at the time the London residence of the Prince of Wales. This kind of desk is sometimes also known as a Carlton House writing table. The desk is like a normal writing table but the small drawers above the surface form a "U" shape around the user instead of being merely set up in front of him as is usual in a typical bureau a gradin. Unlike other types of bureau a gradin the Carlton House desk usually offers no pigeonholes. There are usually small slopes over the two desktop drawers at the left and right ends of the "U" shape. Drawings of this type of desk were presented by Hepplewhite in his famous design book the Cabinet Maker and Upholsterers Guide and by Thomas Sheraton in his own famous book of designs, The Cabinet Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing Book, thus ensuring its popularity. Satinwood is a hard and durable wood with a satinlike sheen, much used in cabinetmaking, especially in marquetry. It comes from two tropical trees of the family Rutaceae (rue family). East Indian or Ceylon satinwood is the yellowish or dark-brown heartwood of Chloroxylon swietenia. The lustrous, fine-grained, usually figured wood is used for furniture, cabinetwork, veneers, and backs of brushes. West Indian satinwood, sometimes called yellow wood, is considered superior. It is the golden yellow, lustrous, even-grained wood found in the Florida Keys and the West Indies. It has long been valued for furniture. It is also used for musical instruments, veneers, and other purposes. Satinwood is classified in the division Magnoliophyta, class Magnoliopsida, order Sapindales, family Rutaceae. Alfred Charles Hobbs (1812 - 1891) born in America, when Alfred was only three years old his farther died leaving the family destitute. Beginning at the age of ten, A. C. Hobbs worked at a variety of jobs ranging from farm help to wood carving, carriage building, tinsmithing, and harness making. While an apprentice at the Sandwich Glass Company, he learned to make doorknobs and became interested in locks. For a while he was a partner in a small firm of Jones Hobbs, lock makers. About 1840 he became a salesman for the Day Newell Company - one of America's foremost lock makers. Here he earned a reputation as an expert lock picker. He found that the best way to sell his Companies locks was to pick the locks of his competitors. In 1851 he was sent to the Great Exhibition in London where he successfully picked the famous Chubb and Bramah locks. ( "Great Lock Controversy" .) Assisted by his newly won fame and publicity, he founded Hobbs Co., London, in 1852.

An exceptional 19th century satinwood Carlton House desk attributed to Gillows of Lancaster, the curved superstructure with pierced brass gallery, fitted with two banks of three drawers to the centre, flanked by cupboard doors, the left & right with a document slot above, the reverse inlaid with oval panels, with a gilt tooled burgundy leather writing surface, above three frieze drawers on turned gadrooned and fluted tapering legs with brass caps. Circa 1880 Dimensions: H: 41 1/4 in / 104.8 cm W: 61 in / 154.9 cm D: 32 1/2 in / 82.5 cm Footnote: This particular design of desk owes its name to the one supplied to the Prince of Wales for Carlton House by the court cabinet maker John Kerr in 1790. Its design was later published by George Hepplewhite in 1792 and in 1793 by Thomas Shearer. The publication in Sheraton’s The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing-Book of several plates illustrating the interiors of Prince George’s recently built palace raised the interest for its interior decoration. Three years later, the name Carlton House desk appears for the first time in the Estimate Sketch Book of Gillow of London and Lancaster. A Gillow’s sketch from 1798 differs slightly from Hepplewhite’s and it is closer in design to the present lot, most noticeably displaying the turned and fluted legs and the pierced brass gallery. The design of this desk similar to known Gillow’s stamped models, the type of construction and the typical square brass handles strengthen an attribution to this firm. Literature: ‘H.
