About the Item

Beautiful desks in pinewood by Michael Van Beuren for "Domus" Mexico. The desks have a straightforward and functional design with a floating top supported by a single triangular leg. On the left side, a drawer and storage space divided by a middle shelf. The drawer has a rough-hewn wood pull characteristic of that specific line of furniture made by Domus. The wood has a natural pinewood finish, while some parts display a lacquered color to create some contrast and visual appeal (one in matte red and the other in dark blue). Van Beuren was born in 1911 in New York, USA, and studied at the famous Bauhaus school in Dessau, Germany. With the rise of the National Socialists and the closure of the renowned school, he arrived in Mexico in 1937 seeking business opportunities in design and furniture making. Here, he discovered talented, skilled hands and a wide range of attractive local materials, which, combined with his own aesthetic/philosophical approach to design, led to the creation of many decades of beautiful, utilitarian, and affordable goods for Mexican middle-class households. They don´t display labels, stamped signatures, or written information. The varnish has been refreshed, as well as the lacquered parts repainted.
