At P. Tendercool we honor simplicity. This table graduates with flying colors: a rare antique slab of Chicken-wing wood, slightly bleached, sanded and oiled, mounted on a blackened sand-cast aluminum base (pur PT2 model). We let the materials do the talking: few textures would beat the appeal of a very fine piece of wood, in particular more than a century old chicken-wing wood. No decoration needed. Simplicity. Tendercool, run by Belgians Pieter Compernol and Stephanie Grusenmeyer, is based in Bangkok, Thailand. Stephanie comes from a family of antique dealers and for over a decade has been collecting truly unique slabs of antique hardwood. In many Asian countries families placed a huge low platform on which they'd traditionally sit to enjoy lunch, tea, dinner or sleep on. We first found some of our slabs in North Vietnam, where villagers in the olden days were surrounded by huge trees. Trees they cut to construct their homes. Trees so huge that villagers would slice some into slabs and simply placed these on the floor. Functional design. We estimate that about 95% of these wonderful slabs we collected over a period of 10 years are about one hundred years old. Inspection of the bottom parts show they were clearly cut by hand, pre-machine age...There are never any traces of legs, nor is there ever any carving, just slabs of amazing hardwood. The fact that these wooden slabs still exist is proof of their stone-hard quality. We are not talking pine-wood here: many decades of humid-hot, termite-infested surroundings have had no noticeable effect other than them remaining solid witnesses of a bygone era. They typically have a one-person size: around two-meter long, by about 75-80 cm wide. We almost always find them in pairs: his and hers, Ying and Yang. Which wood? By far the larger number of slabs in our collection is chicken-wing wood, coveted and cherished by many Chinese as Jichimu since the grain of this wood variety resembles the feathers of a bird. Next to Zitan and Huang-Huali wood, Jichimu has enjoyed a wide following and furniture made with this rare wood has been avidly collected since the time of the Ming-dynasty. Unfortunately the secret is out: we now have to pay double to triple the price we paid only a couple of years ago. Collectables As former antiques dealers we are convinced that our ATOP collection will be antiques' to future generations. The wood is already extremely rare and about a hundred years old, the bases sand-cast by hand, and we will let you be the judge of the strength of the design. This is the reason why every table created will receive our burnt-in logo and its unique number stamped at the bottom. We are not discussing limited series here, every single table is unique. Perfect tables Nope. All our ATOPs are imperfect and we would not have it any other way. Each slab has had a life before P. Tendercool, many generations lived with these slabs, leaving their marks. Slabs are never hyper straight and often are a little warped or show some minor cracks. If you like perfect furniture, do not buy ours. If you like character, personality and rarity, be our guest. Lead-time 12 weeks. Important notes Wood finish We have yet to come across The Perfect Wood-Finish. Prior to establishing P. Tendercool in 2009 our family had been antique dealers for over 50 years. We know a thing or two about Old Wood. Eli, our antiques restorer from Belgium, flew over to train our Thai carpenters in traditional Western wood-finishing-techniques. While we can offer Wax, home-made Hot-wax and are experts in the age-old French Polishing, about 95% of our clients prefer an oil finish. Should you be looking for a completely waterproof finish, you may opt for Water-based Polyurethane. All finishes have pros and cons. But fear not No white gloves are needed to enjoy your furniture! Our furniture is meant to be enjoyed, used and abused. Just apply your common sense: do not let spilled liquids sink in over-night, do not place hot pots and pans directly on the wood. Should you consider buying one of our creations we will explain in detail about the do's and don'ts. Sand cast bronze, brass and aluminium We are wood-specialists. We outsource the casting of our metals to a true Bronze-master: Armando is an Italian who used to work for Salvador Dali way back when...Craft any-one? He moved his foundry from Monza, Italy to Thailand now 30 years ago. His major client is the Vatican. We are truly blessed. He is currently training our team so his vast experience will live on. Please note that the sand-casting process is also completely done by hand, step-by-step, for each base: a traditional and time consuming technique which, as the woodwork we offer, can never be 'Perfect': our bases show traces of this technique: some air-bubbles remain in the metal, some weld-marks will be visible as will some tooling traces: brushed lines, some surfaces will be a bit more matte than others...
