About the Item

A most elegant French 19th century Louis XVI st. Mahogany, brass, ormolu, and Sarrancolin marble cylinder desk. The desk is raised by slender circular tapered fluted legs with beautiful wonderfully executed fitted brass chandelles, topie shaped feet, and mottled top caps. Above each leg are finely reeded plaques flanking the straight apron with one drawer decorated with a recessed panel, fine ormolu mottled band, and keyhole escutcheon. The roll top cylinder is flanked by additional reeded plaques and also displays a beautiful recessed panel showcasing the wood grain framed within a mottled wrap around band with lovely ormolu pulls. The top opens to reveal three drawers each with fine ormolu pulls, two storage areas and the original fitted gold tooled brown leather top which pulls out via its original hardware. Above are three additional drawers also decorated with fine ormolu pulls with lovely mottled ormolu borders while the original fitted Sarrancolin marble top is framed within an elegant pierced gallery.

A very high quality French 18th century Louis XVI period mahogany and ormolu desk or writing table, signed C. Mauter. The desk is raised by elegant circular tapered fluted legs with fine fitted ormolu sabots and richly chased fitted foliate chandelles. Above each leg are lovely fluted block reserves with additional finely detailed fitted chandelles. The scalloped shaped apron displays three drawers, each decorated with most attractive ormolu keyhole escutcheons.
