About the Item
Giovanni Michelucci, Geometric Inlaid Wood Desk, Italy, 1970s
A sculptural and architecturally inspired desk attributed to Italian architect Giovanni Michelucci, dating from the 1970s. The piece showcases Michelucci’s characteristic approach — merging functional clarity with expressive craftsmanship.
The façade is executed in a dynamic geometric marquetry of light and dark woods, forming a bold architectural relief that plays with shadow and depth. The alternating inlays of maple and walnut create a striking three-dimensional effect, a hallmark of Michelucci’s late-period design language.
The structure combines simplicity and precision: a rectangular frame on tapered legs with a single side cabinet offering interior storage. The opposite side remains open to preserve balance and leg space. Finished on all sides, the desk can stand freely in the room, serving as a functional sculpture.
This piece reflects Michelucci’s vision of architecture as “living material” — transforming even furniture into a tactile exploration of form and structure. The craftsmanship and composition evoke parallels with the Brutalist and Constructivist movements of the 1960s–70s Italian avant-garde.
