Important Renaissance Revival Desk by Valentino P. Besarel carved with full figure cherubs, panels carved in relief. Putti in various pursuits related to writing and delivering what most certainly would have been Love Letters. The side drawers slide outward, and the small center drawers utilize the chin on the lion mask as their pull. Candle holders offered by full figure carved cherubs. All surmounted by still another full figure of a Putti, our favorite, with feather pen in hand ready to write the next "Love Letter", museum quality. Desk is of demilune shape, centered by a locking cabinet. Every single inch of this piece is amazing. This is a very exciting Discovery for Stephen's Antiques. The Maker, Important "look up the book on him". The Provenance is compelling The Ickes Family Desk. We are Highly Honored to offer this piece to our clients on 1st Dibs. This desk belonged to Harold L. Ickes of the prominent Ickes family. Harold served under Franklin D. Roosevelt as Secretary of Interior. While sustaining the longest tenure of anyone to hold office, he was responsible for implementing much of FDR's "New Deal". The desk was purchased in Italy in the early 1900s Besarel was born in Zoldo Italy, the son of wood carver Giovanni Batista Besarel. He attended the Academy des Beaux-Arts and later established himself when he opened an atelier and shop with his brother located along the Gran Canal in Venice. Besarel married in 1858 to Maria Fontanella and had six children. Many churches in his hometown of Zoldo still feature his work including the Church of Saint Floriano, Church of Saint Nicolo, and Church of the saddened one. His work became so popular that he was petitioned to be the artisan for the Prince of Whales. In 1878 he was awarded a gold medal at the Universal Exposition and was made Chevalier of the Legion of Honor. Thank your for interest. Please check out our full store!
