About the Item

Late Victorian Carved American Tiger Oak Partner's Desk. It's hard to imagine a better example of this style desk. The carving is crisp, the oak is the best cut, the brass handles are special, and even the drawer construction is top shelf. The carving on the side is jaw dropping. All other carved areas and the legs are there to keep up with that kind of quality. It's all quarter sawn oak, the most desirable, and also called tiger oak because of the stripped graining. The drawers are joined with what is called "scallop and dowel". If you look at the sides of the drawer that we pictured, you will see the doweling and the curved area surrounding the dowels. I have never seen one of those drawers in need of re-gluing with that workmanship. On top of that the sides of the drawers, also known as the "secondary wood" is quarter sawn oak. That is overkill. While it is a partners desk with the same drawers on both sides, if doesn't have to be used in that manner. In fact most partner's desks are huge, while this one is just about average depth for this style desk. I am 6'2” and I can sit at this desk and get my legs under the kneehole. We have included rollers if someone is bigger and would like the extra leg room. The rollers will raise the desk about 2”. We had the desk refinished by our master woodworker. He did an amazing job as usual. The old finish was pretty tired. He has been doing this as long as I have, 45 years, and we both agreed that this is the finest example of this style desk either of us has ever seen. It's really that good.

Condition:
We have all the original brasses except for one of the two keyhole covers also known as escutcheons. We have one original and we have a nice original old pair, which we include, but we are still searching for the match. Really so minor.
