About the Item
A beautifully crafted Louis XV French style bureau plat, made in the 1960s by Simon Loscertales and distinguished by its exquisite Kingwood veneer, ornate bronze ormolu mounts, and rich red leather hide writing surface. This finely made piece captures the refinement and decorative flourish of 18th-century Rococo furniture, offering an elegant and expressive presence in any curated interior, whether placed in a living room, library, or refined home office.
The desk stands on sweeping cabriole legs adorned with finely cast mounts, flowing seamlessly into the serpentine apron, which is richly embellished with rocaille-inspired gilt bronze. The herringbone Kingwood veneers are beautifully laid and framed with shaped ormolu, producing an interplay of line and colour that elevates the desk’s architectural form. The inset red leather top is bordered with gilt tooling and framed by a moulded bronze edge, creating a warm and distinguished writing surface.
This example features three drawers, each retaining its original handles, escutcheons, and the maker’s stamped signature, found on both drawers and the underside of the bureau. The drawers are crafted in solid oak, operating smoothly and cleanly, a testament to the quality of work from the Loscertales workshop. Still in its original polish, the bureau has been freshly wax-finished and presents beautifully, with light marks and surface scratches consistent with age and use, all visible in the photographs. Overall, it is a particularly fine model—smaller, perfectly proportioned, and highly decorative. One of the best examples of a 20th-century bureau plat made in the Louis XV tradition.
