About the Item

This exceptional desk was produced in the 1930s by the Czechoslovak manufacturer Mücke-Melder, one of the most significant tubular steel furniture makers in Central Europe during the interwar period. Mücke-Melder maintained close professional ties with Thonet-Mundus AG, holding licenses for the production of designs associated with leading figures of the Bauhaus milieu. The desk exemplifies Bauhaus principles through its clear architectural structure and restrained formal language. A chrome-plated tubular steel frame provides visual lightness and structural clarity, while the symmetrically arranged drawer blocks introduce a warm material contrast. The desk is fitted with original cylindrical Bauhaus handles, underscoring the functionalist approach that defines the period. This example represents a particularly refined execution, featuring a luxurious rosewood veneer. The quality of craftsmanship, precision of construction, and material selection place this desk among the finest Mücke-Melder desks currently known. Comparable examples of this level of execution and preservation are not available on the market at present. An outstanding and authentic document of Central European Bauhaus furniture design from the 1930s.
