About the Item

Rarely seen and even more rarely available Space-Age molded plastic desk manufactured by L'atelier, São Paulo, Brazil. Design attributed to Jorge Zalszupin a Polish naturalized Brazilian Architect, visionary designer the founder of L'atelier. Jorge Zalszupin (1922-2020) studied Architecture at University of Bucharest, Romania and immigrated to Brazil in 1949. His Architectural designs created a demand for custom furniture proposals that suited the style of his projects. In 1959 he founded L'atelier Móveis. Fast forward to 1973 L'atelier expanded its manufacturing plants including modern vacuum molding equipment. Using new and diverse resources including plastic, Zalszupin and his team created modern futuristic furniture and office bay partitions with cutouts and projections serving to support diverse types of objects, such as telephones, correspondence and office material. This awesome molded plastic cantilevered desk features (3) drawers including file drawer, (14) molded plastic compartments for office supplies etc., metal ashtray (so 1970's! Also doubles as a trinket dish), corkboard and a working built-in desk light. This desk is most likely part of Zalszupin's Putzkit plastic furniture line. Now a rare opportunity to own one of the only known examples. The L'atelier brand is widely considered the benchmark for what is now called Brazilian Modern. Remnants of L'atelier label and embossed mark authenticated thanks to Isabela Milagre founder, creator researcher of Bossa Gallery, Brazil.

Jorge Zalszupin Rosewood foldable Desk, Brazilian Midcentury
By Jorge Zalszupin
Located in New York, NY
Writing desk designed by Jorge Zalszupin and manufactured by his company, L'atelier. This piece is covered with rectangular pieces of marquetry wood, a creative resource developed by Zalszupin. The technique consists of gluing several pieces of rosewood leaves of different textures and shades on a furniture surface, which forms a beautiful wood patchwork. This feature allows large surfaces to be coated with a larger visual unit, making it easier to combine different furniture together. This writing desk is a dynamic piece, which can be used both in the corporate and domestic places, a characteristic very present in Zalszupin's production. About his marquetry technique, Zalzszupin affirms: "I thought about combining several patterns of rosewood, lighter, darker, with different types of veins, that is, creating a new pattern for all desks...
