About the Item

This rare Mauser B 65 desk, produced in Germany around 1954, is a postwar interpretation of one of Marcel Breuer’s seminal Bauhaus designs, originally conceived in the late 1920s. Manufactured by the Mauser Werke in Waldeck, the desk exemplifies the continued relevance of Bauhaus principles within the context of mid-century industrial production. The design is defined by its clear architectural structure and disciplined functionalism. A frame of chromed tubular steel supports a black lacquered steel carcass and an original linoleum work surface, materials emblematic of both early modernist experimentation and postwar German manufacturing. The desk’s composition is deliberately asymmetrical. A fixed left-hand container with a functional tambour roll-top door is balanced by a floating drawer on the right, creating a dynamic interplay between visual lightness and structural clarity. This asymmetry reflects Breuer’s early exploration of spatial balance, movement, and industrial rationality in furniture design. Mauser’s postwar adaptations of Bauhaus prototypes are renowned for their precision and material quality. This example stands as an exceptionally rare survivor, preserving its original configuration and surface character. Both sculptural and utilitarian, the desk represents a refined synthesis of Bauhaus modernism and 1950s functional design, suitable for institutional, architectural, and advanced private collections.
