About the Item
A Chinese export lacquer bureau on stand with toilet glass, decorated with an unusual polychrome flower design. Made in China circa 1750, the decorative design of this exquisite lacquer bureau is taken from Western prototypes subsequently adapted in the Chinese style. Due to the raised and prominent nature of the design, It is rare to find a Chinese lacquer toilet mirror of this date still intact
Acquired in country house condition, we were aware that a 19th Century application of thick French varnish had discoloured, muting the rich and vibrant colours below. Thankfully we have been able to remove the varnish without affecting the original layers of lacquer below. Further cabinet work has been carried out to check the carcass and general condition.
