About the Item

Striking example of Italian Radical design, this red “Orix” desk was created by architects Vittorio Parigi and Nani Prina for Molteni in the early 1970s. Bold, sculptural, and unmistakably futuristic, the Orix desk reflects the experimental spirit of the era, merging playful form with functional innovation. The desk features a vibrant red molded plastic top with integrated storage recesses, sculpted wave-like pen holders, and a recessed central work surface protected by a clear glass panel. Its chromed tubular steel base provides a sleek structural contrast, emphasizing its modernist lines. An adjustable chrome lamp is mounted directly to the desk, enhancing both utility and visual impact. This piece is emblematic of Molteni’s adventurous period, when the company collaborated with forward-thinking designers exploring new materials and forms. The desk remains a collectible icon appreciated by enthusiasts of Radical Italian design, postmodern interiors, and sculptural furniture. Vittorio Parigi and Nina Prina were Italian designers who worked together in Milan during the mid-20th century. They were known for their innovative approach to furniture design, which was characterized by a combination of functionality and aesthetic functional beauty. Parigi was born in 1908 and studied architecture at the Politecnico di Milano. He began his career working as an architect and designer for a number of prominent Italian firms before establishing his own studio in 1946. Prina, was born in 1915 and studied architecture at the Politecnico di Milano as well. She worked for a number of architectural firms before joining Parigi's studio in the 1950s. They were particularly known for their work in the field of industrial design, where they designed products for a number of well-known Italian companies, including Cassina and Artemide and Molteni. One of their most iconic models is the Onix desk created in 1973 for Molteni. Their models are highly sought by mid-century design collectors. Parigi and Prina's work was characterized by a focus on functionality and efficiency, combined with a strong aesthetic sensibility.
