New Stock ✅ Robert Heritage for Archie Shine Planar Desk Rosewood Teak Sideboard Console Table Mid Century Vintage Retro MCM Made in the late 1960s, this fabulous British designed console table/desk/sideboard is a real mid century statement piece. Part of the Planar range designed by Robert Heritage for Archie Shine, which have become vintage icons for designs. Made from rosewood, this piece comes with four drawers with the original inserts on sculpted ski shaped sculpted aluminium legs. The glass top can be lifted on and off easily. Archie Shine was one of the top British makers of up-market contemporary furniture in the 1960s and into the 1970s, and his pieces were retailed by Harrods and Heals of London and other top quality shops in the UK. Archie Shine pieces were expensive back in the day, and pieces such as this were always luxury items so not found in large numbers and much sought after today. Robert Heritage designed furniture for a number of British makers in the 1950s, 60s and 70s, but is best known for his work for the top quality London maker Archie Shine. Archie Shine furniture was retailed by Heals and a few independent up-market provincial retailers. Robert Heritage was also an influential Professor of Furniture at the Royal College of Art from 1974-1985. The Planar Range was introduced in 1967 and was considered radical at the time and didn’t sell in large numbers. The British economy was starting to struggle and the Labour government greatly increased income tax for those with higher incomes which definitely affected the market for more expensive pieces.
