Vintage Mahogany Chippendale Nostell Priory Partner s Desk, 20th Century

About the Item

This magnificent flame mahogany lion's head partners desk demonstrates the highest standards of the cabinet maker’s craft and dates from the second half of the 20th Century. This desk is an exact copy of the desk supplied by Thomas Chippendale to Sir Rowland Winn in 1767 for his residence Nostell Priory in Yorkshire. In our view it represents all that is the finest from the 18th century including perfect proportions fine cabinet making and carving of the highest quality. The original of this desk is owned by the national trust and is at the house of Lord St Oswald, Nostell Priory. This superb desk is finished all round so it is free standing, the top is lined in the finest olive green gilt-tooled hide, and the deak has been beautifully crafted from flame mahogany. The desk feature beautifully carved lion's heads, with acanthus and laurel carving, and it stands on elegant lion's paw feet. All this carving in solid mahogany is the work of a master carver. It is identical on both sides, the cupboard doors on one side each open to reveal a bank of four graduated drawers, solid mahogany lined with brass drop handles, and a central frieze drawer. The doors on the other side open to reveal a drawer above four vertical file dividers and a central frieze drawer. Christie’s sold a similar replica Thomas Chippendale desk, by London furniture makers Arthur Brett, for £221,000 in March 2017. The monastic buildings were converted into a house after the Dissolution; in 1650 the estate was acquired by the Winn family. Sir Rowland Winn, the 4th baronet, having returned from the Grand Tour in 1729, began to build the present house in c.1730. The plans for the house, based on Palladio’s Villa Mocenigo, were likely formulated by Colonel James-Moyser; they were executed, with alterations, by James Paine in 1735-50. In the 1760s the 5th baronet commissioned Robert Adam to complete the interiors; the resulting Neo-classical decorations are among Adam's best. The decorative painting was carried out by Antonio Zucchi, the plasterwork by Joseph Rose the younger and the furniture by Thomas Chippendale. Flame mahogany Thomas Sheraton - 18th century furniture designer, once characterized mahogany as "best suited to furniture where strength is demanded as well as a wood that works up easily, has a beautiful figure and polishes so well that it is an ornament to any room in which it may be placed." Matching his words to his work, Sheraton designed much mahogany furniture. The qualities that impressed Sheraton are particularly evident in a distinctive pattern of wood called "flame mahogany." The flame figure in the wood is revealed by slicing through the face of the branch at the point where it joins another element of the tree.
