About the Item

Set of two tables and eight dining chairs, solid pine, brass, France, 1950s Crafted in solid pine and preserved from a 1950s ski hotel-lodge tucked high in the French mountains near Switzerland, this set of tables and chairs carries you straight back to the spirited montagna culture. The ensemble speaks of warm interiors, the fresh scent of spruces, and the magic of the winter mountain life. These pieces belong to a pivotal moment in alpine culture. The popularity of winter sports, and with it the fascination for mountain chalets, can already be traced back to the 1920s. But it was in the years following the Second World War that this enthusiasm fully blossomed. As postwar Europe rediscovered travel and leisure, ski stations and mountain chalets flourished, and architects sought to create interiors in harmony with the mountain environment, designing rustic-inspired designs with a new, modern comfort. The shapes are unmistakably rooted in the French alpine tradition: bold, sculptural silhouettes carved from generous slabs of pine, their constructive logic fully revealed rather than concealed, and executed according to traditional methods. The wood is thick, weighty, and beautifully worn, its surface still marked by time and use. The tables rest on wide, gently flared trestle legs joined by a sturdy crossbar – forms deeply rooted in vernacular mountain craftsmanship. Their edges remain subtly irregular, a reminder of the hand and landscape behind them. The chairs, with their split, tapering backs and sharply angled legs, echo the language of designers like Henry Jacques Le Même, Jacques Vibert, Christian Durupt, and of course Charlotte Perriand. Figures who played an important role in the construction of traditional hôtel-chalets and ski resorts in the Savoy-Alpine region, and who understood the poetry of rural craft, elevating it into modern design. Here, their spirit is evident in the handcrafted approach, an air of the region, and honest use of materials. Une pièce de montagne Française.
