About the Item

A Frank Gehry compact dining set featuring 2 bentwood maple ply Cross Check chairs matched to a maple and glass Face Off dining table manufactured by Knoll International. Originally designed in the late 80’s Gehry’s Cross Check chairs and Face Off table formed part of a collection produced by Knoll International in collaboration with their most famous consultant, the art collector and New York socialite Barbara Jakobson. After three years of experimentation and exploration, the collection was debuted in the Frank Gehry New Furniture Prototypes show at The Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1992 with production starting shortly afterwards; the collection proved to be an immediate success with many of the designs still being produced today. Inspired by the strength of the apple crates he played on as a child, Gehry created his ribbon-like designs using thin strips of maple ply bonded with flexible glue. The resulting structures echoed many of the sculptural and organic forms that had become his architectural trademark. As always Gehry’s designs transcended conventions of style by exploring the essential challenge of deriving form from function and his collection for Knoll exemplified that ethos. The chairs in particular feature the same style of flowing lines and surfaces as found in many of his most famous creations. As such they appear as deconstructed elements of form that harness sweeping, sinuous curves in pursuit of the perfect sitting experience. In this way the clever use of the interwoven bent plywood slats yields with a soft spring like effect to give comfort in the seat and back. Both the chairs and the table date from 1998 and bear the manufacturer’s mark and Gehry’s signature to the base of each piece as shown in the accompanying pictures. All the pieces in this set are in very good vintage condition with the woodwork showing small marks and signs of use as expected – the glass has no chips and only minor scratches to the surface and can be removed from the base if required for storage or transportation. The set is perfect for a smaller dining space or in a breakfast room, conservatory or on a covered patio. Dimensions: Table – H74 x Dia 102cm Chairs: H85 x W59 x D57cm Seat Height: 46cm.

Pair Vintage Cassina Le Corbusier, Perriand and Jeanneret LC2 Leather Armchairs
By Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, Charlotte Perriand Cassina, Cassina
Located in Highclere, Newbury
A pair of vintage original Le Corbusier, Perriand and Jeanneret LC2 Chrome and Ivory Leather lounge chairs for Cassina with labelled upholstery and serial numbers. The price shown is for both chairs. The LC2 chair, designed in 1928 by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, and Charlotte Perriand, is a key piece in the evolution of modernist furniture. Originally part of a series created for the Villa Church (a private residence for a client in the Paris suburb of Ville-d'Avray), the LC2 epitomizes the collaborative spirit of the three designers. Its tubular steel frame and free form cushions marked a break from traditional designs, combining minimalist form with unexpected comfort. It was first presented in 1929 at the Salon d'Automne in Paris as part of a collection that would later be called the Equipement Interieur d’une Habitation (Interior Equipment for a Living). Alongside the LC2, the trio designed other iconic pieces, such as the LC1 Sling Chair, the LC3 Sofa, and the LC4 Chaise Longue. The LC4, in particular, is often considered one of the most innovative pieces in the collection, with its curved steel frame and adjustable reclining mechanism it was not just a chair, but a piece of furniture designed to enhance relaxation. As such it became a symbol of the modernist ideal—furniture that was as much about living comfortably as it was about making a design statement. The LC designs were created not just as individual works but as a broader vision for modern interiors, where furniture wasn’t just decorative but integrated into the living environment, serving both aesthetic and functional purposes. While the LC2 chair was part of this vision for the Villa Church, it wasn't designed specifically for that one space; rather, it was a part of an overall shift towards modernist furniture that transcended any one project. When compared to the Bauhaus metal chairs...

4 Poul Kjaerholm PK9 E. Kold Christensen chairs with seat height extensions
By E. Kold Christensen, Poul Kjærholm
Located in Highclere, Newbury
A set of 4 Danish Mid Century vintage leather and steel PK9 chairs designed by Poul Kjaerholm for E. Kold Christensen with additional bespoke, later designed, optional seat height extensions. These are a beautifully crafted set of chairs with a simple but striking form that have often been cited as Kjaerholm’s finest work; and for good reason… as the story goes Kjaerholm was inspired by a sand imprint of his wife’s behind from a day at the beach. Later, during the design process, Hanne Kjærholm sat in boxes of clay to find the most optimal and comfortable solution; so now you know. These also have the additional benefit of expertly crafted seat height extensions that can be used or not, depending on the height of your preferred table. Note that these are not original extensions as the chairs didn't ever have such additions as they were designed at a lower height to match Kjaerholm’s PK tables...

20th Century American Dining Table Four Chairs By McGuire
By McGuire
Located in Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent
Welcome to the timeless legacy of John and Elinor, the beloved founders of the iconic McGuire Furniture, a San Francisco-based institution that has been synonymous with craftsmanship and creativity since its inception in 1948. As a dynamic couple, their lifelong partnership laid the foundation for the distinctive McGuire style, a harmonious fusion of natural materials such as rattan and hide with the sleek lines inspired by Asian aesthetics. Discover the essence of their visionary work embodied in this exquisite dining table and matching chairs—a testament to their enduring impact on design. Crafted in the latter part of the 20th century, this McGuire dining set showcases the hallmark bamboo frame that is quintessentially McGuire. The table, adorned with a rectangular beveled glass top in pristine condition, stands as a testament to the timeless elegance of McGuire's craftsmanship. The bamboo base boasts a delightful warm hue, effortlessly infusing any modern interior with the inviting, relaxed ambiance reminiscent of California design. Immerse yourself in the classic beauty of McGuire Furniture, where each piece tells a story of innovation, craftsmanship, and the enduring allure of mid-century California style. Some history about the manufacturers: Like so many artists and designers, husband and wife John McGuire (1920–2013) and Elinor Stevenson (1914–2005) became masters in their trade by accident. The couple met just before the start of World War II (during which John was in the U.S. Navy and Elinor was a navigation instructor) and got married after it ended. They settled down in San Francisco where John held a couple of jobs — among them selling newspaper ads for the San Francisco Examiner while Elinor worked for Boeing Aircraft. Soon, an old Navy buddy of John’s asked him to help sell a bunch of rattan furniture and, needing the money, John agreed. His side business became so successful that John decided to quit his ad-sales job and work full-time in design. In 1948, McGuire Furniture Company was born. Alongside themed-century modern furniture designs then gaining popularity in the United States, John introduced an unconventional idea: traditional armchairs, stools and tables made of natural materials such as bamboo, which was strong yet could be rendered pliable when steamed, that were intended for the indoors rather than the front porch. The brand’s first success was the now famous Director’s X-Chair byLeonard Linden. The military-campaign-style solid oak folding chair launched in 1956 and saw rattan binded with rawhide strips and a high-grade leather slug seat and back that eliminated the need for a plush cushion. Elinor, too, designed some of the brand’s popular pieces, such as 1968’s Cracked Ice chair. With its rattan oval back a dazzling celebration of geometric forms that give it its charming moniker, the Cracked Ice chair was an instant classic and is one of the brand’s most recognisable designs. Today, McGuire and another American furniture manufacturer, Baker Furniture Company, comprise Baker Interiors Group. McGuire remains true to the founders’ ideals and commitment to crafting the kind of organic modern furnishings that are synonymous with the warm and relaxed feel of California design. The company has collaborated with interior designersSteven Volpe, Orlando Diaz-Azcuy and Nicole Hollis...
