Gothic Revival Style Dragon Motif Brass and Leather Mahogany Oak Dining Set

About the Item

This 8-piece set begs a lot of questions. Some will remain unknown, but we'll do our best. First, take a broad, sweeping overview and lets all just agree this dining set is beyond amazing. Even if medieval neo-goth and emo aren't your thing, you must appreciate the solid mahogany construction, dovetail joinery and attention to detail. To the best of our knowledge, these pieces appears to be American made Neo Gothic / Gothic Revival from the 1960s or 1970s. On the cabinet, ornate brass hinge and pull accented cabinet door frames outline an interior of lattice giltwood over burgundy / gold textile. In between are hinged cabinet doors and two shelves. Oxidized rivets secure a dragon motif crest dyed and stamped into a thick scroll of leather. Brass medallions punctuate each side of the credenza. The designer was also compelled to hang a wood pestle plumb bob by a chain on the underside the cabinet flanked by decorative, curved metal braces. We're not sure why it's there, but it makes a statement. The legs are painted with staggered bands of gold and red between natural bands of finish. If all this isn't cool enough, the cabinet interiors are stained in crimson. This color is perfect for cinematically displaying your potions, tinctures, jars of formaldehyde or shrunken heads. Pull open the tabletop to reveal a cleverly stowed-away “butterfly” leaf that hinges out and easily falls into place. Extend the table from a an ample 4-seater to a 6-seat. The legs are painted with staggered bands of gold, black and red between natural bands of finish. Large brass tacks accent the edges of both seats and backs. The seats have been redone in black vinyl, but the backs retain their original embossed decorative medieval dragon motifs. New vinyl seats. Original leather backs have been conditioned but some imperfections remain. No press board on these pieces. The majority is solid mahogany and oak with pine on the undersides. Excellent overall condition. The solid mahogany tops were refinished by our in-house cabinet shop. All pieces have also been detailed top to bottom. Imperfections on original black leather chair backs. Measures: Tall hutch H 68.5 in. x W 43 in. x D 17 in. Chairs: H 36 in. x W 17.75 in. x D 16.38 in., seat height 18.5 in. Dining table: H 29.5 in. x W 64 in. x D 38 in.

Dorothy Draper style campaign credenza made by esteemed US furniture maker Thomasville circa 1970s. Old growth flaxen flared grain fruitwood (most likely pecan) from top to bottom are the hallmarks of the Embassy line. Please believe me when I say pictures don't this piece justice. The cherry wood shimmers and gleams with an almost indescribable Iridescence that looks like rivers of honey that form the ebbing and flowing grain. The tones and hues of the piece change depending on how the light hits it and where your eye catches it. You'll see amber, ochre, honey, and umber. We purchased this cabinet from the son of the original owners who had it custom made in the 1970's. Although it looks similar to the works to Jens Risom, Arne Vodder, and Brown-Saltman, this is a custom, made 1 of 1 credenza. There are many unique aspects to this piece that seem inspired by many designers of the period. A large cherry door on the left conceals open cabinet space with removable / adjustable shelves. The right has a faux-door panel that is made to resemble the one on the left. However, this faux-door is actually the front panel to a roll-out bar cart.
